Using glyphs is a simple and often overlooked practice to improve the overall appearance of text in minutes.

The best way to access the glyphs is to use software that supports OpenType features, such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, CorelDraw or Affinity Designer. All the swirly alternatives of standard letters and characters will help you customize and elevate your designs with minimal effort. What’s more? Most of these fonts come with dozens of beautiful alternates – glyphs. So you are limited by the number of projects you can use these fonts for and also left with a barebone version of otherwise a feature-rich font with tons of lovely extras.

But in many cases, free fonts that you find online come with a personal use license and can only be downloaded as a demo version with no glyphs or additional characters support. The number of fonts available to designers and crafters is infinite, so is the amount of time you spend looking for that perfect fit. I know my way around typography and the best classic typefaces that would suffice for any design, but new fonts keep inspiring me at every turn. Discovering the power of fonts and learning all about tails, stems, and ears that letters are made of was the best takeaway from my years in the graphic design program. My mind is just spinning with all the options that this has opened up! It’s like a brand new world has opened up for me. And magically, the top line of text turns into the bottom line. Click CTRL-V and the selected character will be replaced with the alternate glyph. Next, go to your design and highlight the character that you want to replace. I chose to use alternates for the “s” and “e”Ĭlick on the character, click “select” and then click “copy”. Then scroll through the character map and choose the alternate glyph that you want to use. To access alternate glyphs, right click on the START menu and click SEARCH. In the search field, type “CHARACTER MAP”. Ready? Create a new document in Photoshop Elements and add some text. I do not know if this works on operating systems other than Windows 10. I’m going to teach you how to do this on a PC.

Guess what? Clearly, by the title of this post, you know that it is possible to access the alternate glyphs even if you are not using the full version of Photoshop. Photoshop Elements does not have this menu so I was always under the (wrong) assumption that all this cool stuff just wasn’t available to me. In Photoshop, you can access these variations through the alternative glyph drop down menu. HOW TO USE ALTERNATE GLYPHS IN PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS Personally, I like the bottom version better. The bottom version contains swashes that are alternate glyphs. The font is Edelweis and it is popular for wedding invitations.

When you download and install a font, sometimes the fonts come with variations of letters and different types of swashes and flourishes that can add a lot of interest to your designs. I didn’t know how to use alternate glyphs in Photoshop Elements. I would download and install all these amazing fonts and see all the “extra” stuff that came with them but was convinced that I could not access any of it because I didn’t use the full version of Photoshop. And for the longest time, I was completely oblivious to the fact that all those alternate letter styles and swashes were available to use in Photoshop Elements. Photoshop Elements is my go-to design tool for all my prints.
